JERA Co., Inc. conducts world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia

JERA Co., Inc. has announced the successful completion of the world’s first truck-to-ship bunkering of fuel ammonia. This milestone event took place, supplying an ammonia-fueled tugboat owned by NYK Line at Yokohama Port’s Honmoku Pier. The A-Tug is scheduled for completion in late August 2024.

The bunkering operation was conducted in collaboration with the Yokohama City Port and Harbour Bureau, under a fuel supply agreement that JERA concluded with NYK on May 27, 2024. The fuel ammonia used in this operation was produced by Resonac Corporation at its Kawasaki Plant, partially using waste plastic as a raw material. The same fuel ammonia will be used for the A-Tug’s sea trial, and after the A-Tug is completed, JERA will supply fuel ammonia to its operator, Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha Corporation.

Given the toxicity of ammonia, extensive safety measures were established through repeated discussions with stakeholders, including NYK and Resonac. These measures included developing safe handling methods for fuel ammonia, creating a system for its safe transport and receipt at the port, and formulating safety protocols to address potential leaks.

JERA is committed to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions from its domestic and overseas business operations by 2050, as outlined in its “JERA Zero CO2 Emissions 2050” initiative. The bunkering of fuel ammonia for ships represents a significant step in extending decarbonisation solutions beyond the power generation sector to other industrial applications. As a pioneer in fuel ammonia, JERA aims to facilitate its adoption across various industries.

Using ammonia as marine fuel, which emits no CO2 when burned, offers a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional fuels. This innovation is expected to significantly contribute to achieving zero-emissions shipping in the future.
